Farmers’ Market

It’s a warm sunny weekend, what are your plans? Maybe get out and enjoy some fresh air, find some people to socialize with? Sounds like the perfect chance to head on down to your local farmers’ market!

Farmers’ Markets are a hub for the local economy and small businesses. Not only will you find your local farmers selling their seasonal produce, but all sorts of other professions will be present too. Baked goods, wines & craft beers, cheeses, crafts & arts, and more. Buying from small businesses helps to stimulate the local economy more so than from standard big box stores.

The fresh and seasonal produce found at the markets also act as a good jumpstart for a balanced and healthy diet. Typically the produce will have less chemicals used on it than on the massive commercial farmed stuff found in the supermarket.  And, as it is locally produced it has spent less time being shipped around in a refrigerated truck. You are also likely to find less common produce there, such as red carrots, rainbow tomatoes, or even things like goose and quail eggs.

And for seniors who are on a tight budget, but would still appreciate access to healthier foods, many of the Farmers’ Markets participate in government voucher programs. Make sure to check to see if your local market does so as well.

The markets are also a great way to make connections with others. Acting as a type of community center, they attract people from all sorts of walk of life. These people tend to be very passionate about their crafts and love to chat with others about their interests.

The Farmers’ Markets are an excellent way to spend some time on your weekends. Get some healthy foods, discover something fun, and maybe even make some friends.
