Alcohol and Seniors ~ What’s Too Much

People work so hard all their life, they go through ups and downs, stressing over how to make ends meet and after all that, they get to retire and do things for themselves. Part of this may include relaxing and enjoying a cocktail or two.  But what is too much or too often? Is there an age where alcohol consumption is no longer an option?

Comfortkeepers says “10-15% of people don’t start to drink heavily until they are older in age”.

There are some elements to aging that can give alcohol a bigger impact on a person’s body.  It is best to consult with a doctor before engaging in drinking alcohol. Health conditions or medications may not mix well or may even be worsened by having a drink.

Another element of concern is that the effects drinking may be overlooked due to stereotypes of aging. For example: if a senior has previously been known for having balance issues then tries to get up after a couple drinks and lose their balance. Loved ones may not connect the two problems. According to Alcohol Addiction Center “alcohol contributes to 60% of falls.”

As we age our metabolism slows which can cause alcohol to stay in the body for longer periods of time. Intoxication can also come on more quickly and even last longer in seniors. Kaiser Permanente recommends that healthy adults over age 65 should have no more than 7 drinks in a week and no more than 3 drinks in one day.

There are some tactics one could keep in mind if they feel they need to limit their alcohol consumption. If you are going out to a social setting, plan before meeting up. What will you drink and what is your personal limit (if any)? Drinking water in between cocktails and eating before or during consumption of alcohol will help your body with processing. Keep track of the amount, having a record will help you reflect and acknowledge your habits.

So, all in all, alcohol is not necessarily a bad thing. When aging adults choose to engage in cocktails be sure to look at all aspects. Has your doctor given approval? Are you limiting your consumption? Are you in a safe place with no need to drive or use stairs? Have you eaten and hydrated enough for the day? Responsible drinking is possible, be conscious of your choices and the effects on your body.  Cheers!
