Summer Vacations

Summer is a mere few weeks away, and we’re all ready and itching to get out and moving! Due to last summer being, well, the summer of 2020, many missed out on our usual summer outings. Now that the vaccine is out, and most of our residents have gotten it, our attentions have turned back towards our summer holidays.

First and foremost, COVID-19 still presents a potential risk, even if you are completely vaccinated. Worldwide, this pandemic is far from over, even in many parts of our own country, or even state. However, if you are fully vaccinated and feel that wanderlust, go for it. Just remember to take a common-sense approach; outdoors events that aren’t overly crowded are a solid way to ease back into things, but tightly packed indoor gathering, especially those where you have no idea if others are vaccinated or currently sick, are probably best to be avoided.

When going for longer trips, remember to get up and stretch. Seniors are at an increased risk of clots in their legs from sitting for multiple hours at a time. If going on a long car trip take multiple stretch breaks every few hours, try and do the same if flying. If possible an aisle seat can make it more convenient to get up and stretch, but don’t be afraid to scoot on out if you aren’t.

With plenty of space outside, and the right time of day, you don’t need to worry about people crowding in too close. But there are plenty of things to remember about going to the beach. As we age our skin becomes thinner and more delicate. When we were younger, walking through the sand barefoot, or laying down on it proposed no problems at all. But the ground can be quite a handful. Abrasive sand, burning hot sidewalks, and sharp seashells all pose serious issues. Bring a pair of proper-fitting beach shoes to help keep safe.

In years past, we have held group vacations for our seniors. This allowed them to go out and have fun, yet still be able to be around and socialize with their friends. These have have varied from such things as an Alaskan cruise, to Vegas trips, and many more in between. And of course we also host smaller trips as well. Local beaches, brewery tours, walks through the natural parks, etc.

With warm weather coming, and the pandemic receding, we are looking forwards to a fun and eventful Summer!
